About the Athelings

The Athelings are a selected team of target rifle shooters picked from the best CCF, ACF, SCC, ATC and ACF's cadets in the U.K. They must be under 19 years of age on the 1st day of September in the year in which they join the team.

Their applications are submitted during the Autumn term and a Committee of 12 selectors choose the best 18 cadets who apply.

Criteria for applying are:  : The cadet must have experience shooting in competition at Bisley
The level at which they compete must be very high
Must be under 19 years of age.
They should have competed in at least one main NRA meeting in July
They should have an excellent cadet record
They must have accompanying references from their Headmaster or Cadet Unit Commander.
Both male and female cadets are chosen on equal terms.

The selection is made around Christmas or New year and 18 cadets and 2 reserves are informed in January.

There is a compulsory training weekend 'Exercise Maple Taste' usually over the first weekend of the Easter holidays when a team of top international coaches spend the Friday, Saturday and Sunday training the individuals and the team in both short and long range shooting. The equipment is carefully inspected by the team Armourer, Peter Medhurst, and part of the uniform and badges are presented.

The members of the team always shoot the July NRA meetings at Bisley before embarking on the three week tour to Canada where they will be in competition with the Royal Canadian Army Cadet team and also shoot the Dominion of Canada Meeting at Connaught ranges, Ottawa as individual competitors.
